Ladybird's Flight: About Me

About Me

I am Leanne Barrett, second generation Canberran, with a Polish and English heritage who came to Australia post WWII. However my first Australian born relative was my Great-Great Grandmother who was born in Brisbane in 1863. I was married the weekend after I finished my first university degree. I now have one adult son and a pet Australian Terrier.

I am would call myself an emerging writer and artist. I have recommitted to exploring my creativity in this blog. I have taken time out from paid work and volunteering to pursue my creativity.

I want to explore...
  • my drawing and painting
  • writing both fiction and non-fiction
  • how to use my preferred mediums and try new ones
  • art with my friends
  • talking about art with colleagues
  • how to use digital tools - including this blog

I have a Masters in Education (Teacher Librarianship). I have worked in both primary and secondary school libraries.

Through out my adult life I have had a long career as a volunteer
  • ACT Branch of The Children's Book Council of Australia
  • Reviewer for Kids Book Review (2012, 2016 - continuing) and Reading Time (2011-2013)
  • Royalla Landcare Group
  • Guide at the National Gallery of Australia
  • plus school and church group committees or tutoring.
I am a genealogist compiling my Australian/English family history.

I like to;
  • read adult historical fiction and fantasy and I adore reading children's picture books.
  • attend all manner of lectures and talks - as I love to learn
  • go to art exhibitions and movies
  • listen to music
  • sing and play the piano (badly)

Why is this blog called Ladybird's Flight?
The ladybird has been my special animal ever since I was a little girl and professed to a man enquiring what my name was that it was LADYBIRD. And FLIGHT because though this journey I want to find my wings, my confidence in my own creative ability and finally soar instead of my creativity coming last on my to do list. Oh and I love the colour red.
